Backpacking Malaysia for Solo Travel - Malaysia Travel Guide

As a solo and backpacker destination:

Malaysia may not be quite as popular as it's northern neighbour Thailand but still has a lot to offer the single independent traveler.

Malaysia is slightly more expensive than most of the other South East Asian countries but is still cheap by western standards.

Accommodation:

Like Thailand there are very few dormitories in the hostels in Malaysia. You will almost certainly have your own room. This should not pose too much of a problem if you are looking to meet other travellers.

Because Malaysia is slightly less popular than Thailand you are more likely to be sharing a guesthouse with fewer people which can make for a friendly atmosphere. As a solo traveller the more off the beaten track you get the friendly other travellers tend to be.

The cheapest places to stay tend to be Chinese owned guesthouses.

Budget:

Guesthouses in Malaysia tend to start at around 50 rg for a single room to 90 rg double. Prices to vary throughout the country and tend to be cheaper in KL.

Camping options are limited in Malaysia and are normallyconfined to national parks and jungles.

Trips and activities:

Malaysia offers the solo traveller a wealth of activities throughout the peninsular and Malaysia Borneo.

Here is a list of ideas.

Trekkingin the Cameron islands
Cultural trips around he capital KL
Visiting the virgin rainforests.
Learning to dive around Malaysia's islands
