Glencoe from a Rolls Royce - Car Touring around Scotland

Some years ago I came to Scotland to spend a year with learning English and travelling around the amazing Scottish countryside. That time Hungary was not a member of the European Community so I had no choice but looking after children as an au-pair. It meant I did not earn much money to support my trips. Nothing could stop me touring around that was why I hitchhiked every time. Usually I had wonderful experiences about my lifts, one day the guy was so worried if I could get back to Edinburgh that he gave me £20 just in case of emergency.

One weekend in April a friend of mine and me decided to go to the Isle of Sky. We set on our journey early in the morning. We took the train to North Queensferry and started hitching from there. I remember the weather was very changeable: sunny one minute, rainy the other, a constant wind was blowing. I should admit there was sunshine while we were sitting in the cars and raining while we were waiting for our lift.

We got pretty soon to Crieff through Perth . We felt happy, lucky and young. From Crieff to Lochearnhead we lost our charms as hardly anybody wanted to take us to our destination. After some hours we reached Lochearnhead where we were almost immediately offered to be given a lift to Kinlochleven. We regained our good mood and felt happy, lucky and young again. Then everything changed. We were standing in the middle of nowhere for hours and we could not even see a car passing by. The road was deserted. We decided to walk to the next inhabited village but we were not sure which direction to start. We felt miserable, unfortunate and old. Very old. We dreamed of nothing else but Edinburgh and a comfortable bed when out of blue we heard an engine roar approaching us.

We could not make out where it came from so I rushed to the other side of the road. Wherever that car intended to go we agreed to go that way. The sound advanced very slowly. We thought it would never turn up.

Then the biggest and most elegant car I had ever seen appeared at the bend of the road. All my hopes vanished right away because cars like that never stopped for poor East European au-pairs. Fortunately my pal put his arm out for signing our desire. I could not help laughing as I was watching my friend trying to stop a luxury car with a funny smile on her face in the middle of nowhere. For my greatest astonishment the Rolls Royce pulled out.

It waited for us. We could not move. I believed it was to leave as soon as we were running towards it. It did not. I heard my mate to shout at me to catch the automobile but I was absolutely paralysed. I am not able to recall what made me move finally and how I got to the car, I guess it must have been my quickest run, but the next moment I was sitting in a Rolls Royce heading towards Fort William . I confess I saw Glencoe before that but it seemed to be even more beautiful from that car. Unfortunately I cannot write about the driver himself we promised to keep his identity secretly.

From Fort William to Fort Augustus it was easy to get a lift again and we arrived in the Isle that evening still doubting what had happened to us. We had a lovely time on the island. The next day we travelled back to Edinburgh and hoped to see our car again but it did not turn up so we had to do with Fords, Peugeots and Rovers.

If you wish to visit the Isle of Sky I suggest to stop at Kinlochleven, wait hours in the rain and who knows? Our Rolls Royce may give you a lift!
