Travelling solo has been a thing for many years now. Being along in a foreign country need not be intimidating, no matter who you are. Solotravel.org has put together some guidelines to make your solo trip a success.
Dining alone is not unusual
For many individuals, the idea of eating alone presents a significant obstacle to embarking on solo travel. However, once one overcomes the belief that others are observing or judging them, it can become an incredibly liberating experience. “Dining alone is more common than you might think,” states a creative director and influencer who advocates for solo travel. “I find it quite empowering! Sometimes I bring a book or watch an episode of my favorite show on Netflix with my headphones, while at other times, I simply relish the ambiance and engage in conversation with those at the adjacent table.”
Choose counter seating if solo dining feels uncomfortable
For those who feel uneasy about eating alone, selecting a bar or counter seat can be a more approachable option. This setting is significantly less daunting than occupying an entire table by oneself, and it increases the likelihood of striking up a conversation with the staff or fellow patrons. “The first time I dined alone, I visited JG Melon on the Upper East Side of New York City I brought a book and nervously settled onto a bar stool for my burger, but I ended up engaging in conversation with the friendly bartender and the woman beside me. Now, I frequently choose a counter seat when dining alone and no longer bring a book. I either converse with someone or simply enjoy the tranquility. A principle I adhere to is that everyone is so focused on their own lives that they hardly notice others.”
Explore hostel accommodations
Hostels not only offer budget-friendly lodging but also serve as excellent venues for meeting fellow travelers, whether they are also journeying solo or not. Many hostels feature an affordable bar on-site, facilitating natural conversations with fellow guests who may become friends or at least provide valuable recommendations for activities.
Embrace the mindset of confidence
It is common for individuals to feel apprehensive about meeting new people, and introverts, in particular, may find it challenging to initiate contact in unfamiliar environments. Traveling by train offers a distinctly more social experience compared to air travel, even for those who typically enjoy engaging with others, according to associate editor Hannah Towey. “During my solo journey last summer on the Amtrak Coastal Starlight from Santa Barbara to San Francisco, I spent the entire nine-hour ride in the communal observation lounge. There, fellow passengers came and went, sharing tables and playing cards while taking in the scenic views. As the sun set during the latter part of the trip, a few musically talented travelers formed an impromptu band, featuring an acoustic guitar and a mandolin. Gradually, word spread, and more people joined in from various sections of the train to take turns singing songs in multiple languages. Although this mode of travel may take longer than flying, it presents the opportunity to meet someone special, akin to finding the Ethan Hawke to your Julie Delpy, and enjoying an unexpected evening together in Vienna.”
Plan Around Cultural Events
Arriving at a destination just as locals prepare for significant cultural events can provide an enriching experience. Research religious festivals, public holidays, and street celebrations to determine the optimal time for your visit. Engaging with these events allows you to experience the local culture, cuisine, and music, and may lead to new friendships.
Research Solo Travel in Your Destination
While it may seem obvious, conducting thorough research is crucial. Explore online forums and consult individuals who have previously traveled to your destination. What safety measures should you consider? Is it advisable to walk between locations, or would it be better to use taxis? Are taxis readily available? What is the local culture like after dark? For women, particularly, it is wise to plan ahead to avoid being stranded in isolated areas after nightfall.
Have a Rough Plan for Each Day
Waking up in a new destination without a clear plan can be overwhelming. Therefore, it is beneficial to create flexible itineraries for your trip.
Develop a general outline for each day
Waking up in an unfamiliar location can be overwhelming, so it is beneficial to establish broad itineraries for your journey. Consider what aspects of the destination are essential for you. Are there significant landmarks you wish to visit? Restaurants you have longed to experience? Beaches you have dreamed of exploring? “I prefer to have 3-5 small activities planned for each day, such as visiting a specific shop or sampling the local cuisine,” Estée shares. “Having some direction allows for flexibility between activities, enabling you to be spontaneous and explore the local surroundings.”
Incorporate group activities
Participating in tours and group events is an excellent method to connect with fellow travelers. Many hostels provide a list of activities for guests to join, and if such options are unavailable, consider local walking tours or live music events at nearby bars. “View people as opportunities,” advises Toby. “Integrate communal activities into your itinerary, keeping in mind that you may never encounter these individuals again. Therefore, there is little to lose in engaging with them, and potentially much to gain—though it is worth noting that there may be an element of male privilege in this perspective.”
Walk as extensively as possible
“Occasionally, I feel apprehensive about leaving my accommodation as a solo traveler,” Estée confesses. “However, once I step outside and begin to walk, I feel more at ease—like I am part of the city and belong there!” Exploring on foot is an effective way to familiarize yourself with the essence of a destination. You will quickly develop a mental map of the vicinity surrounding your lodging and may discover hidden treasures that you would not have encountered otherwise.
Embrace spontaneity
In this regard, it is important to allow for some spontaneity. While having a general plan is advisable, do not hesitate to follow your instincts if you feel compelled to enter a shop, pursue the sounds of a crowd, or head to the beach. Often, it is these impromptu choices that lead to the most memorable experiences.
